What a Drag...

Shikamaru  Nara the genius from Konoha village belonging to Nara clan, and specializes in shadow paralyses jutsu (I know probably you guys would know that). This post is discussed around why Shikamaru was promoted to Chunin in the first part of Naruto anime, after chunin exams.

Chunin exam can be taken by any Genin with the team of 3 members, which involves written exam, collecting scrolls and fighting round matches.
It was shown that you certainly need not have to win the final rounds to be promoted to chinin rank, as in the case of Shikamaru, Who was promoted to Chunin, first from all the 9 genin's and 3 genins from team Guy.

Shikamaru didn't win the final round but displayed excellent tactical skill in both fights against Kin Tsuchi from team Dosu who entered under orders from Orochimaru and other fighter was Temari (Damn he was having some luck, kunoichi's everywhere), in both the matches he's tactics made him win but not technically in second match where he gave up on the match because he was bored or probably didn't have any interest.

Now my point comes into picture, I'm not against making Shikamaru a Chunin, but are Ninjas supposed to be Lazy, which was Shikamaru. He never wanted to do hard work, he liked sleeping chilling out and watching the sky, never wanting to do hard work, get a family and die without doing anything remarkable.

He was promoted to Chunin because of his great intelligence and tactical skills but his Laziness would have lead him to some extent of downfall. But he realized it what it takes to be a chunin and showed us what he was capable of.

Most probably he was promoted because the storyline of Naruto needed him because of his tactics and smart decision making and reading and understanding the situation.
Which was put to test in Sasuke recovery mission, a team of ninjas put together involving Naruto, Kiba, Neji, Choji, Akamaru and Shikamaru as their Leader, as there where not many chunin's available in the village at the time.

Shikamaru was shown making excellent decision and tactics which was mind blowing to watch, how he made use of each members of the team depending on their specialties.
But the mission was failure as they weren't able to recover Sasuke, and almost every one were injured.
But from that Shikamaru realized and worked hard, this is the thing I like, and he was never shown as Lazy as he was before.

O my final thought are Shikamaru did well as a chunin, but promoting him only because of his intelligence and tactical skill's were but unfair, as Neji was also a eligible ninja to was intelligent not as much as Shikamaru though.
